Pavers or asphalt: what to choose for a driveway?

Pavers and asphalt can both make a functional driveway in Quebec. Asphalt creates a continuous, dark and generally more understated surface. Pavers are modular, offer more design possibilities and make localised repairs easier.

The upfront investment, the appearance and the maintenance differ, but both options share the same requirement: a durable driveway starts with excavation, a base, compaction, slopes and drainage suited to the ground and the vehicles.

The questions to ask before comparing finishes

A driveway is not just a rectangle in front of the house. It has to allow manoeuvring, connect the street and the garage, handle snow and water, and then fit in with the walking routes.

You have to settle:

  • the number and the type of vehicles;
  • the turning and parking areas;
  • the slope between the street, the garage and the property;
  • the path of the water and the low points;
  • the existing edges, walls, steps and walkways;
  • the snow-clearing method;
  • access to any lines under the surface;
  • the look you want and the full budget.

These factors determine the structure of the project and can affect the cost more than the final material does.

Pavers for a driveway

Pavers are units installed on a granular base and held by joints and edge restraints. The product has to be specifically intended for a vehicular surface.

Advantages

Pavers allow a choice among several colours, textures and patterns. They can pick up the lines of the house, frame an area or create a transition with a walkway and steps.

Their modularity makes local work easier. An area can be lifted to correct the base, replace a few units or reach a service, then be put back. The repair is generally better integrated than a patch added into a continuous surface.

The segmented system can accommodate certain seasonal movements in a distributed way. That characteristic does not replace an adequate base: pavers installed over unstable or constantly saturated material can settle or shift.

Points to plan for

The upfront cost can be higher depending on the product, the patterns, the cuts and the amount of work. Joints and edges call for follow-up. Snow-clearing equipment has to be used in a way that will not catch the edges or displace units.

The guide to the advantages and maintenance of pavers covers these points in more depth.

Asphalt for a driveway

Asphalt forms a continuous, relatively uniform surface. It is often chosen for its visual simplicity, how quickly it goes down once the base is ready, and an upfront investment that can be lower than a high-end paver.

Advantages

The smooth surface makes driving and snow clearing easier when it is well built. Its discreet appearance fits many kinds of property and allows a large area to be surfaced without a complex pattern.

Asphalt can also be combined with paver edges or a paver walkway to structure the driveway and connect it to the front landscaping.

Points to plan for

An asphalt surface changes under the effect of time, loads, sun, water and freeze-thaw cycles. Cracks, depressions or wear can appear. Maintenance and repairs depend on the state of the surface; a localised repair can remain visible.

Sealing and other treatments do not replace a stable base and do not correct a deficient slope. Whether they are appropriate, and when, has to be assessed according to the product and the real condition of the driveway.

The base: the most important thing they share

The surface does not carry the vehicles on its own. The loads are distributed through the structure down into the ground. A driveway base has to be designed for the site, the use and the water conditions.

Preparation can include:

  • removing the soil and unsuitable material;
  • correcting unstable areas;
  • installing appropriate granular material;
  • progressive compaction;
  • creating the slopes;
  • stabilising the edges;
  • building in the drainage before the finish.

An old base can sometimes be partly kept, but only after its composition, its depth, its levels and its condition have been assessed. Laying a new finish over an unknown structure makes the price attractive in the short term, but it can preserve the causes of the existing settlement.

Terrassement XP handles the preparation of driveways and parking areas, coordinating excavation, grading, compaction and slopes.

Driveway drainage and slopes

A driveway receives water from its own surface and sometimes from part of the yard or the roof. The slope has to lead that water away without trapping it in front of the garage, at the bottom of the steps or in a walking area.

Depending on the configuration, the solution can include grading, a channel drain, a catch basin or a pipe. The outlet or the point of management has to be planned in accordance with the applicable rules. Moving water toward the street or the neighbour without verification is not a complete strategy.

Recurring ice is a useful clue. It can reveal a low point, a discharge of water or an area that no longer drains properly. An assessment of stormwater management makes it possible to look for the cause before redoing the surface.

Snow clearing: how do the two surfaces compare?

Asphalt generally presents a continuous surface that is appreciated when a shovel or a machine passes over it. Cracks, edges and transitions still have to be watched.

Pavers can also be cleared efficiently when the units and the edges stay at the same level. A blade or a tool set too low can catch an edge. The type of equipment, the shoes and the method used therefore matter.

For both materials, salts and de-icing products have to be chosen according to the manufacturer's recommendations and the condition of the surface. Applying too much can affect the materials and the neighbouring planted areas.

The hybrid option: asphalt in the middle, pavers at the edges

A hybrid design keeps a large asphalt surface and uses pavers for the edges, the walkways or certain details. It can produce a more structured finish without building the whole driveway in pavers.

The junction between the materials has to be stable and properly levelled. The thicknesses, the laying sequences, the edges and the runoff have to be coordinated from the base up. A decorative band added without structure can shift or hold water.

How should costs be compared?

Compare two quotes of equivalent scope. The full price can include:

  • removing the old surface;
  • excavation and hauling;
  • correcting or rebuilding the base;
  • the drainage;
  • the edges, steps and junctions;
  • the material and its installation;
  • restoring the lawn and the plantings;
  • access and handling constraints.

Asphalt is often positioned as the more economical option, but that is not an absolute rule. A base to rebuild or significant drainage work can dominate the budget whatever the finish. Pavers also vary enormously with the product and the complexity of the pattern.

Which option suits your priorities?

Pavers can be preferred when customisation, repairability and integration with the other landscape elements matter a great deal.

Asphalt can suit when a large continuous surface, a simple appearance and a controlled upfront investment are the priorities.

Combining the two is worth considering when you want to structure the driveway with edges, or connect an asphalt surface to paver steps and walkways.

In every case, a finish should be chosen only after the levels, the water, the base and the transitions have been confirmed.

The Terrassement XP approach

Terrassement XP plans driveways and parking areas around the traffic, the vehicles, the slope, the drainage, the snow and the relationship with the walking areas. The company carries out paver installations and also builds asphalt and edges into its residential landscaping projects.

Frequently asked questions: pavers or asphalt

Which material lasts longer?

Lifespan depends on the soil, the base, the water, the loads, the installation and the maintenance. Both surfaces can deteriorate quickly over an inadequate base. A universal lifespan does not allow an honest comparison between two different projects.

Is asphalt always cheaper?

No. It often carries a lower upfront investment than certain pavers, but demolition, excavation, the base, the drainage, access and the dimensions all affect the total cost.

Are pavers harder to clear of snow?

Not necessarily. A well-laid, even surface clears efficiently. You have to use equipment and a setting that will not catch the edges, as with any outdoor transition or edge.

Can asphalt or pavers be laid over the existing driveway?

It depends on the structure. An inspection has to confirm that the base, the levels and the drainage are compatible. Covering a settled surface without treating the cause can reproduce the same faults.

Which solution is easier to repair?

Pavers generally allow more integrated localised work, since the units can be lifted and put back. Asphalt can be repaired too, but the patch can stay visible and the cause of the crack or the settlement has to be dealt with.

Choose the finish once you understand the driveway

Pavers and asphalt answer different priorities. A useful comparison does not stop at price or appearance: it includes the base, the water, the snow clearing, the repairs and the relationship with the whole frontage.
